Removes GIF Comment Extensions and Adobe XMP blocks only. It preserves animation controls, looping, colour profiles, plain-text graphics, unknown application data, and image frames.

Supported cleanup

The GIF metadata this tool removes

The tool parses the GIF block stream and removes only defined comment and XMP blocks. Display and animation control blocks are copied unchanged.

Comment Extensions

Removes optional hidden text blocks used for credits, descriptions, names, export notes, and other non-graphic information.

Adobe XMP

Removes XMP DataXMP application blocks that can carry creator, rights, date, identifier, and editing-workflow fields.

Animation preserved

Keeps image frames, delays, disposal methods, transparency, and NETSCAPE or ANIMEXTS loop controls byte-for-byte.

Block-level verification

Reparses the clean GIF and confirms the targeted comments and XMP blocks are absent before download.

Know the boundary

Metadata removal is not document redaction

Some GIF application extensions control rendering or are application-specific. The tool preserves them unless they are the defined XMP metadata block.

This tool does not remove

  • Animation frames, timing, transparency, disposal methods, and looping
  • ICC colour profiles and unknown application extensions
  • Plain Text Extensions, which are renderable GIF content
  • Visible pixels, resizing, optimisation, conversion, or recompression

Where it helps

When a GIF can carry more than the animation

Comments and XMP are not visible in the frames, but they can retain authorship, rights, dates, descriptions, or internal production context.

Publishing an exported animation

Remove editor-added comments and XMP before posting a GIF to a website, community, support article, or public download.

Sharing work anonymously

Clear supported creator, rights, identifier, description, and project text before sharing an animation outside its original workflow.

Reusing a supplied GIF

Create a metadata-clean copy while retaining the original frame sequence, timing, transparency, and loop behaviour.

Common questions

Questions about removing GIF metadata

GIF application blocks can control animation or carry metadata. This tool removes only the blocks it can distinguish safely.

Will the GIF still animate and loop?

Yes. The tool preserves image frames, Graphic Control Extensions, timing, transparency, and known looping application blocks. Tests verify that NETSCAPE loop data survives cleanup.

Which GIF data is removed?

The tool removes GIF89a Comment Extensions and Adobe XMP DataXMP application blocks. It preserves colour profiles, plain-text graphics, animation controls, and unknown application extensions.

Does this change GIF pixels or recompress frames?

No. The tool removes complete metadata blocks from the existing byte stream. It does not decode, resize, optimise, or recompress the image frames.
